The World Cup is the most glorious international football competition, bringing together thousands of viewers around the world. The World Cup is organized every four years and brings together the thirty-two best national teams in the world. Thus, each team that participates in the World Cup receives a bonus according to their progress in the competition.
Let's see together the distribution of bonuses for national teams.
1. Distribution during the different rounds of the tournament
The bonuses awarded to national selections during the World Cup rounds vary from one edition to another. Each team eliminated during the group stages received a bonus of $9 million. The teams reaching the round of 16 received $13 million. Those eliminated during the quarter-finals received $17 million. The team that finished in fourth place received a bonus of $25 million and $27 million for the third place. The finalist team received $30 million and the winner received $42 million. In addition, each qualified team received $1.5 million for preparations. This is an overview of the bonuses allocated to teams during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
2. Distribution between federation and players
For the World Cup organized in Qatar in 2022, won by Argentina, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) awarded $440 million in bonuses at the time of this edition. The bonuses awarded by FIFA to the teams are first paid to the football federations of the different countries. Thus, each federation decides to distribute it between the staff, the players and other uses. a) Distribution of World Cup bonuses by federations
The federation takes 50% to 70% of the allocated amount which is used for projects such as football development, infrastructure and others. Players and technical staff receive 30 to 50% of the bonus. This is the case of France (finalist of the World Cup in 2022, having received 30 million dollars as FIFA bonus), 30% of the money (about 9 million dollars) was allocated to the players and staff and the French Football Federation (FFF) kept 70% or 21 million dollars for the progress of French football. Argentina (winner) received 42 million FIFA bonuses, about 40% was distributed to the players and staff and the rest to the federation. b) Distribution of bonuses between players
In 2022, each Argentinian player received $500,000 from their competition winner's bonus and each French player received approximately €400,000 as a finalist. In 2018, the French world champions each received €550,000 and in 2014 the German world champions each received €300,000. The Moroccan players each received $2,500,000 for their feat in 2022, thus occupying fourth place.
The World Cup is the most watched sporting event in the world. The winner's bonus increased more than 5-fold between 2002 and 2022 ($8,000,000 to $42,000,000). FIFA is expected to continue this steady increase in World Cup prize money as the number of teams increases from 32 to 48 for the 2026 edition.
