Turnover: billions at stake

With more than 6 billion euros in annual turnover! That's more than I've spent on shampoos and failed haircuts my entire life. France had more than 109,306 salons in 2022, you could almost say that there are more hairdressers than pigeons in the city.

Hair salon profitability: every cut counts

Each salon makes an average of between €76,000 and €80,500 per year, and I'm not even talking about tips! And with over 2.6 people per salon, you could almost have a small party every day.

Clientele: Who pays the bill?

But be careful, not everyone gets their hair done. Women represent 55% of the clientele and generate 72% of the turnover of hair salons. Men represent 35% of the clientele and generate 24% of the turnover. And what about children? Well, they remind us that even little ones need a cut from time to time.

Prices: The price of beauty

And the prices, you might ask? Well, for women, it’s an average of €44.3 for a shampoo, a cut and a hairstyle. For men, we’re at an average of €21. But don’t worry, gentlemen, you can always console yourself by telling yourself that you’re saving on hair products.

Barber Market: Beards in Fashion

And where are barbers in all this? Well, they are booming, with 6% annual growth. And guess what? 92% of men aged 25 to 34 have beards. You could almost say that beards are an expense that will increase the weight of men's budgets.

Employment and apprenticeships: cutting to the chase

More than 90% of hair salon employees are women, but be careful, there was a 2% decrease in salaried jobs in 2023, or 2,162 positions. Fortunately, there was a 7% increase in apprentices compared to 2021, or 1,601 additional apprentices.
