The number of tourists in Paris

After a few years of hiding behind masks rather than drinking on terraces, Paris is finally back in top tourist form! The cobblestones once again echo beneath tourists' feet and suitcases, and everyone wants their photo taken in front of the Eiffel Tower. In short, the capital is rediscovering its art of making people dream. Discover in this issue all the statistics that prove that Paris has lost none of its magic.

Tourist numbers are clearly recovering

In 2023, Paris and the Île-de-France region welcomed 47.5 million visitors, confirming the recovery momentum that began after the pandemic. In 2019, 50.6 million people visited the region. This figure fell to 17.4 million in 2020, before rising to 22.6 million in 2021, then to 44.1 million in 2022. Fifty million visitors are expected in 2024, with the spotlight on the Summer Olympics. Expected revenue amounts to €19.6 billion.

A well-distributed French and international tourism

Of the 47.5 million visitors in 2023, 21.6 million were domestic travelers and 25.9 million were international visitors. French tourists reached 24.7 million, representing a 56% market share, a level equivalent to the pre-crisis level. American tourists recorded 2.4 million stays in 2022, a decline of only 5% compared to 2019, making them the largest international traveler. The British came in large numbers with 2 million visitors, followed by the Spanish (1.5 million), as well as Italians, Germans, Belgians, Dutch, and Swiss. Some European nationalities even exceeded their 2019 attendance.

Hotel and cultural activity remains dynamic

The region recorded 66.6 million hotel nights in 2023, an increase of 112% compared to 2021. Greater Paris now has 2,184 hotels with a total of 133,000 rooms. The capital also attracts visitors with its 143 museums and 2,230 historic monuments, reinforcing its appeal. In 2023, there were nearly 24 million hotel arrivals, an increase of 8.4% compared to 2022.

Congresses, trade shows, and events show strong growth

Business tourism also stood out, with 648 conferences organized and 823,000 delegates welcomed, generating €1.59 billion in economic benefits. Regarding trade shows, attendance increased significantly in 2023, with a 16% increase for trade shows and a 13% increase for consumer shows. These events help maintain Paris as a major international destination for both leisure and business.

Paris has never truly lost its appeal; it simply put its passport on hold. Today, it is back in the spotlight, more attractive than ever. As Paris prepares to take a new step forward, the question arises: how will the capital be able to reconcile this growing attractiveness with the challenges of sustainability and quality of life for its residents while allowing tourists to fully enjoy the City of Lights?
