Tourism in Benin
Benin is a small country in Central Africa, considered a flagship destination, rich in extraordinary cultural, historical, and natural heritage. This vitality is explained by the expansion of tourism, which enhances the country's national identity and economy. The country attracts visitors each year, accounting for approximately 3% of the national GDP and generating numerous jobs. Let's take a look at the aspects of this tourism.
Ouidah is a symbolic place recalling the sad history of the slave trade. Visitors walk the legendary slave route, a place of meditation and remembrance. Every year, thousands of visitors gather there to experience the profound emotion of this history. The city attracts nearly 500,000 tourists annually. In this tourist region of Ouidah, all organized events, such as commemorations and guided tours, generate the equivalent of €17 million annually (including the sale of souvenirs and local crafts).
In the middle of Lake Nokoué lies the town of Ganvie. It rises from the water, resting on wooden stakes, making it resemble Venice. Visitors travel the lake in canoes, admiring the way of life and harmony that resides there, so struck by the proximity of the water. Each year, Ganvie welcomes nearly 100,000 visitors, captivated by the authenticity of the place. Activities related to crafts, tourist circuits, and local visits generate revenue of approximately USD 8 million per year (or even USD 7 million).
Pendjari National Park is an ideal place for nature lovers. It covers an area of approximately 1,300 km² and is home to various animals such as lions, elephants, kangaroos, and other bird species. The site has seen a remarkable increase in the number of visitors over the years, highlighting a growing interest in its preserved natural environments. Guided excursions and safaris allow tourists to explore the landscape, guaranteeing emotional moments. The park welcomes approximately 200,000 tourists annually, generating revenues of approximately $12 million (€12 million).
The Beninese coastline basks in the sun in Grand-Popo. Between its fine sandy beaches and caressing waters, this town embodies the coastal art of living. The murmur of the waves accompanies swimmers while the wind plays with the sails of athletes. On the golden sand, every step invites visitors to meditate. At the same time, these markets are a feast for the senses and an ode to heritage, brimming with authentic art objects and souvenirs. This blend of relaxation and cultural discovery allows visitors to leave with a light heart and an enriched spirit. Each year, nearly 50,000 visitors enjoy the pleasant moments at this site. Thanks to the hotel, restaurant, leisure, and local craft industries, revenues amount to approximately USD 5 million per year (€4 million).
For the period 2023 and 2024, annual tourism revenues in Benin have been estimated at approximately €215 to €230 million.
Benin therefore has many tourist attractions, with a rich natural environment, history, and traditions that can attract many tourists. With wise investments and greater international visibility, the country could become one of the most popular destinations in the region.
