Belize's Defense Budget

Belize is a small country with approximately 400,000 inhabitants, located on the east coast of Central America, bordering the Caribbean Sea to the east and dense jungle to the west. Belize does not have a traditional army, but rather a Belize Defense Force focused on internal defense. Belize's defense forces include the Air Force, Army, and Coast Guard. These military expenditures are low compared to other nations. What about its budget? Let's find out together.

Belize's General Defense Budget

In 2023, Belize's defense budget was nearly BZ$40 million, or US$20 million, representing only a small portion (2 to 3%) of the national budget, which is BZ$1.5 billion, or US$750 million. Distribution

Military Salaries and Training

Salaries are administered by the Belize Defence Force (BDF) and vary depending on experience, rank, and responsibilities.

A private earns approximately BZ$1,000 to BZ$1,500 per month (US$500 to US$750). A non-commissioned officer earns approximately BZ$1,500 to BZ$2,500 per month (US$750 to US$1,250), and an officer BZ$2,500 to BZ$5,000 (US$1,250 to US$2,500).

Maintenance of Military Equipment and Infrastructure

A portion of the budget is allocated to the maintenance of military equipment and infrastructure. These maintenance expenses represent US$2 million to US$4 million, which is equivalent to between 10% and 20% of the overall budget. This includes the maintenance of individual and crew-served weapons, vehicles, and communications and surveillance systems.

Homeland Security Operations

Approximately 50 to 70% of the defense budget is devoted to homeland security operations, or US$10 to US$15 million. These funds cover joint operations with the police, land and maritime patrols, logistics, and equipment for emergency responders.

Funding through International Cooperation

Strategic partners such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Taiwan, and international organizations play a key role in funding defense and security in Belize.

The United States, as Belize's largest partner, allocates millions of dollars annually through the Central American Regional Security Initiative (CARSI), including US$500,000 to US$1 million per year for the training of BDF officers in the United States. The United Kingdom also provides logistical support, with several hundred thousand dollars per year for the maintenance of military infrastructure. Taiwan contributes approximately US$1 million to US$2 million in defense support to Belize.

Belize receives approximately US$5 million to US$10 million per year for defense, combining contributions from all partners.

Belize's defense budget reflects the unique challenges and strategic characteristics of a small country with limited economic resources. Despite financial difficulties, the country maximizes its defense capabilities thanks to its partners who provide essential financial support.
