The fir tree, the star of Christmas, is an explosive mix of symbols and scandals. Before Jesus Christ, it was already the star of the pagans, a symbol of eternal life at the winter solstice. Christians “converted” it into the tree of paradise, and there it is in living rooms, lit up like a disco to celebrate the holidays and Christmas in particular. Some cry out about overconsumption, others about ecological sacrilege, but let’s face it: without a fir tree, Christmas would lose some of its charm!
As Christmas 2024 approaches, the Christmas tree industry is establishing itself as a seasonal economic pillar. In Europe, this market is worth €1.5 billion, with an annual production of 80 million natural trees, largely dominated by Germany (25% of the market), followed by Denmark, Poland and the United Kingdom.
Natural fir tree: In 2024, the price of a natural fir tree varies between €25 and €80, depending on the variety (Nordmann or spruce) and the height.
Artificial fir tree: Prices range from €1 to €21 for the entry-level range, but premium models, such as the ArtiTree Premium, can reach up to €389.99. In France, the average price paid remains around €30, which reflects a certain stability in purchasing habits.
Exports: The Netherlands is the world’s second largest exporter after China, with sales of €228 million in 2022.
Imports: The United States dominates, with imports of €3.5 billion. In Europe, the United Kingdom (€328 million) and the Netherlands (€226 million) are among the largest buyers.
Sales growth: Real tree sales prices have increased by 7%, with 1.8-metre trees costing between €29 and €75. This increase reflects continued demand despite economic constraints.
United Kingdom: €100 billion in planned spending, leading European countries.
Germany: €85 billion, confirming its economic strength.
Belgium: A more modest figure of €11.5 billion, but still significant.
The Christmas tree has transcended its traditional role to become a universal symbol of joy and celebration, reaching beyond families. It brings beauty and magic to the holiday, filling homes with light and enchantment. Today, 20% of tree buyers are single, a growing trend that reflects a personal desire to create a warm and festive atmosphere, even when family is not around. Christmas unites all hearts, no matter their configuration.
