The production rate of Moroccan tomatoes varies according to climatic conditions, agricultural policies and water resources. The regions of Souss-Massa, Gharb and Doukkala offer better climatic conditions for production in all seasons.
This region is the backbone of the Moroccan economy thanks to favorable natural conditions and well-advanced technology, also playing a key role in national taming and export. This region devotes approximately 8,000 to 10,000 hectares to tomato cultivation and represents approximately 85 to 90% of tomato production for export. It produces approximately 1.2 to 1.4 million tons each year with approximately 500,000 to 600,000 tons exported per year. Tomatoes produced in this region are exported to France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Russia and the Gulf countries. Different varieties are grown such as round tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and tomatoes for processing.
Located in the northwest of Morocco, this region is an important area for tomato production, benefiting from a favorable climate, fertile, well-drained soils and equipped with sophisticated equipment. The regional production of tomatoes is mainly intended for the local market, 60 to 70% and part is used for the processing industry (concentrates and sauces), 30 to 40%. Open field tomatoes, greenhouse tomatoes are the types of tomatoes grown in this region. About 2500 to 3000 hectares are devoted to cultivation for an annual production of about 100,000 to 120,000 tons of tomatoes per year, it represents about 7 to 8% of the national tomato production.
It is located in the coastal plain of Morocco, although it is less dominant than other regions, it is a key agricultural area of the country. About 2000 to 3000 hectares are dedicated to the cultivation of tomatoes for a share of 5% in the national production. In 2023, the region produced 87,000 tons of tomatoes intended for the local market.
In 2023, the annual production of tomatoes in Morocco reached approximately 1,420,000 tons for which an extension of approximately 22,000 hectares is dedicated, which gives it the place in the top 18 of the main tomato producing countries in the world. Tomato export is one of the most active sectors of Moroccan agriculture, thus strengthening the national economy. Morocco's tomato exports generate 8 to 10 billion dirhams per year. The third largest exporter of tomatoes to Europe in the world, between July 2022 and June 2023, Morocco shipped a total of 716,700 tons of tomatoes to international markets.
Thanks to its continuous efforts at innovation and diversification, tomato production in Morocco continues to be a major element of the national economy. It generates considerable income, contributes significantly to the development of rural areas and creates jobs. Measures such as Generation Green 2020-2023 aim to strengthen the sustainability of this production and improve the use of resources.
