The Paralympic Games, where wheelchair super-athletes show our calves who’s boss! With thousands of participants, these heroes prove that the word “limit” does not exist in their dictionary. Prepare to be dazzled by the participation of these extraordinary champions.
For a country to participate in the Paralympic Games, it must have a National Paralympic Committee (NPC) recognized by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), meet the criteria for classifying athletes according to their disability, ensure the qualification of its athletes according to international sporting standards, and comply with strict anti-doping rules. In addition, adherence to IPC regulations, including ethics and gender equality, is essential to ensure fair and inclusive competition.
From 28 August to 8 September 2024, Paris will welcome around 4,350 athletes from 175 nations for the Paralympic Games. These inspiring athletes will compete in 549 events spanning 22 Paralympic sports. This event will mark a highlight of the year, uniting the world around a passion for sport, excellence and perseverance. Paris will thus become the stage for an exceptional competition, celebrating diversity and surpassing oneself.
The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will see a strong presence of several nations, including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil and Russia.
China, the great dominator of the previous editions, will send a massive delegation. At Tokyo 2020, Chinese athletes won 207 gold and 96 silver medals, for a total of 603 medals, putting them at the top of the rankings.
The United States: Traditionally a Paralympic force, is also expected to be well represented. At Tokyo 2020, the Americans finished second with 104 gold and 37 silver medals, for a total of 269 medals.
The United Kingdom: Taking third place on the podium in Tokyo with 124 medals in total, is expected to send a strong team to Paris, continuing its tradition of Paralympic success.
Brazil: Finishing fourth with 72 gold and 58 silver medals, for a total of 189 medals, is another country to watch.
Russia: Participating under a neutral banner, they will be represented in force, having won 36 gold and 57 silver medals, for a total of 118 medals at Tokyo 2020. Paris 2024 promises to be another showcase of their talent.
Africa will be well represented at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, with delegations already confirmed for some countries. South Africa, for example, has announced that it will send 20 athletes who will compete in 7 different sports. Kenya, another strong African country, will send a team of 83 athletes. Although the exact numbers for the other African nations are yet to be determined, several other countries from the continent are also expected to participate in this great celebration of Paralympic sport.
