Morocco has increasingly ambitious sporting ambitions. These include the infrastructure development of its stadiums, not only to host national and international competitions, but also to stimulate the economy and enhance the country's image on the world stage.

Morocco's Ambitions for Its Sports Infrastructure

Although Morocco already has several large stadiums, such as the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca and the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, most of these facilities date back to the 1990s and early 2000s. Some have not been modernized since their construction, which can pose problems with safety standards, spectator reception and comfort, as well as their functionality for international events. The country is therefore embarking on a process of updating and developing its infrastructure to meet the requirements of future major events. Morocco has been chosen as the host country for the 2025 African Cup of Nations, a major event for the African continent. This competition highlights the importance of having modern, well-equipped stadiums to ensure a flawless organization. The country must prepare around ten stadiums that meet CAF (Confederation of African Football) standards and can accommodate tens of thousands of spectators. This event is part of a process aimed at promoting Morocco's image as a sporting leader in Africa.

Furthermore, although Morocco was not chosen to host the 2030 World Cup, it is one of the participating countries, hosting some matches. To prepare to host matches and teams, Morocco is investing heavily in renovating and expanding its existing infrastructure. The goal is to meet FIFA criteria in terms of stadium quality, accommodation, and logistics. The country is also considering submitting its bid to host the 2032 Olympic Games. Although this initiative is still in the exploratory phase, it represents a long-term goal for the country. Organizing the Games would require the construction of modern, multifunctional stadiums and a much larger budget.

The Budget Behind Stadium Expansion in Morocco for 2025 and 2030

Morocco has planned significant investments to meet its sporting ambitions. The budget for the renovation and construction of new stadiums is estimated at approximately €3.3 billion. This budget covers the expansion of the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, the rehabilitation of the Tangier Stadium, as well as new projects in cities such as Ben Slimane (near Casablanca), Marrakech, Fez, and Agadir.

For the 2025 AFCON and the 2030 World Cup, the renovations required to meet FIFA and CAF standards are expected to reach a total budget of approximately €1.8 billion. Stadium development is accompanied by a strategy to boost the tourism economy and job creation. The total economic impact, particularly from the spinoffs from sporting events, is estimated at approximately €1.2 billion.

For 2030, this represents an extension of stadium investments. The overall budget for renovations and the construction of additional stadiums is expected to reach approximately €5.4 billion. These funds will be used to complete projects launched in 2025, while also adding new stadiums for various international sporting events.

With these ambitious investments, Morocco is clearly seeking to assert its position as a leading destination for international sporting events. However, do these investments guarantee sustainable development and continued growth of Morocco's sports and economic sector, beyond the scheduled events?
